This week I am researching the pros and cons of aquifer abstraction in the MENA region for Middle East Economic Digest magazine. Everyone knows that the region does not have an abundance of groundwater reserves so careful management of existing aquifers is crucial. Unfortunately the World Bank says that overabstraction remains a big problem and some aquifer water levels are dropping by 5m per year. Others are suffering from infiltration of saline water as freshwater is replaced by its salty counterpart. But management is improving, and governments, along with private sector partners are paying close attention to ensuring that their reserves are managed more sustainably.
