This week I am trying to understand how the UK’s biggest contractor Balfour Beatty is going to operate more sustainably. The company has launched its “2020 Vision” where is aspires to improve profitability, local communities and the environment through being a more sustainable business. The article is for its own magazine “Update” and must really tell the employees what the plans are all about and how they will affect them. The challenge varies from simply identifying the things employees already do like minimising on-site waste or supporting trainees from local colleges to introducing whole new concepts like water footprinting and calculating embedded carbon in a project. But the message overall is that it is everyone’s responsibility to get on with it – speaking of which I must do the same!
