My latest project is working on a power and desalination report for MEED. The region faces an enormous challenge in ensuring that energy and water demands can be met by future generations and I am looking forward to reporting on how this is being planned and implemented. The approach varies enormously from nuclear generation and 100% re-use of wastewater in Abu Dhabi to the shifting policy from liquid fuel use to gas in Saudi Arabia and reduction in groundwater extraction in Oman.
As demand rises (at up to 11 per cent per annum in some states) it is not suprising that governments have been embarking upon energy efficiency programmes to try and prevent the type of peak demand that saw Kuwait suffer blackouts in the summer of 2006. But these savings are limited and investment in power and water supply remains a critical expenditure for governments, who generally foot the regional electricity bill as tariffs remain low.
The report is to be published in MEED on 17th March.
