Underground Utilities

Tunnels & Tunnelling International have decided to launch a new title that focusses on small bore tunnelling. Underground Utilities launched in February and I will be providing content for water related projects. The first issue saw an emergency pipe replacement in Washington using a Robbins 900mm mixed ground cutter head driven by an auger boring machine. It was not an easy task as the contractor Northwest Boring had to place the new pipeline under the state’s busiest highway – Interstate 5.

Meanwhile back in the UK Scottish Water have been busy using a 2.44m Herrenknecht Earth Pressure Balance Machine (EPBM) to bore a 1.2m diameter stormwater tunnel to reduce flooding in Airdrie.  Contractor Byzak completed the bore in December 2011.


The new magazine is initially a quarterly through 2012 and I am on the lookout for interesting projects for the next issue. Dublin and pipejacking are already in the pipeline……
